Re-Opening of Churches for the Celebration of Mass

When our churches begin to re-open for the celebration of Mass and other Sacraments, it is important that we have the means to regulate the number of people attending and to avoid being in a position where we might have to turn people away at the door. This is particularly likely to be the case at Sunday Masses given the large reduction in our capacity because of the need for social distancing. The government regulations also ask that we keep a record for 21 days of the names and contact details of all those who visit our churches. It is therefore essential to have a booking system in place for each church before public Masses are celebrated there. In our Parish this system will be online. There may be parishioners who do not have access to the internet, therefore, you can book for someone else, but their details must be completed in the same way. Please click and read the Questions and Answers attachment from the Diocese to give you an idea of what to expect.*Please note - bookings for weekday mass are not required. Just weekend Masses.

Questions and Ans

28th August 2020

Government guidance for the safe use of places of worship states that churches should assist NHS Track and Trace by

keeping a record of those who come to church. Therefore from Tuesday 1st September we will be asking people coming

to Mass (and other liturgies eg. baptisms, funerals) to provide their name and phone number. I thank you for your cooperation with this further measure to help stem the spread of Covid-19 and keep those attending our church safe. The most efficient way of collecting the information is for each person to bring to Mass a piece of paper with their name and phone number on, and at the back of church drop it into an envelope labelled with the date and time of Mass.

Please note: Only a name and phone number is needed, if a family come together, only one contact number is

needed. Anyone is free to decline to provide details and still attend Mass. Details collected will be stored securely for

21 days.

If NHS Track and Trace contacts the parish, details of those who attended the relevant Mass will be made

available to them. After 21 days details collected will be securely disposed of. If you have booked through the Eventbrite system on the parish website there is no need to give your details again. Please note, that as set out in the Government guidlines as of 8th August you will also be required to wear a face covering / mask. There are some circumstances, for health, age or equality reasons, where people are not expected to wear face coverings. Please be mindful and respectful of such circumstances, noting that some people are less able to wear face coverings, and that the reasons for this may not be visible to others. We would ask that you bring your own face covering as we only have a limited supply for those who may not have access to one.
